The True Meaning Behind the Name of Jesus: Debunking Misconceptions

Updated: Jan 7

The Name, Jesus

There have been numerous controversies about the name, Jesus. Some debate the name Jesus is a pagan god. I did much research and prayed fervently because I do not like to share wrong information. I try my best to search truth, for I love truth.

Some argued that the name Jesus comes from Hesus Horus Krishna created by Roman Emperor Constantine, since the name is Jesus Horus Christ. Some have not heard of Jesus Horus Christ; however, I did learn that name from a catholic school I attended many years ago. So, I know it’s true that Horus was the middle name. Hesus Horus Krishna are three pagan gods’ names. Hesus is a Brittonic and Gaulish god; Horus, an Egyptian god; Krishna, a Hindu god. Although the names are similar to Jesus Horus Christ, however, I did not find any backup information regarding the creation of the pagan gods’ names for Jesus.

Another argument was that Jesus came from the name Zeus. The Greek for Zeus is Ζεύς, Διός, and Δία. Greek for Jesus is Ἰησοῦς. It is unlikely that Zeus is Jesus, since I do not see the resemblance or spelling between the Greek names. Zeus is considered a Greek sun god and a god of all gods. Since, Jesus is a progeny, he cannot be Zeus.

English spelling cannot be equated with Greek spelling to develop a theory. Zeus is different from Iesous. And Ζεύς, Διός, and Δία is different from Ἰησοῦς. Zeus (English) is different from Ἰησοῦς (Greek, Jesus).

Jesus comes from the Greek word, Ἰησοῦς, which is Iesous in our English. It’s pronounced as Ee-ay-soos. Latin spells it as Iesus from Iesous, and when the letter J was developed in the 16th century AD, it became Jesus in our English at the 17th century AD.

Greek

Iesous

Ee-ay-sooce

Latin

Iesus

Ee-ay-soos

English

Jesus

Gee-zus

Some say that Iesous is a transliteration of the Hebrew name, Yeshua. Transliteration is finding letters or sounds to match as much as possible from one language to another.

The Greek did not have a letter Y in their alphabet, so the close sounding is the letter I, which is called Iota (eye-o-tah). So, the Ie is the closest sound to Ye.

The Greek did not have a letter H and did not have a “sh” sound. So, the closest match for SH is their letter S, which is called a Sigma (sig-mah).

To match a U sound, they combined two letters OU. Letter O is called Omicron (Om-e-cron) and U, Upsilon (oop-si-lon).

The Greeks always use the Sigma letter at the end of every male names for identity of the gender names. They dropped the last letter which is A from Yeshua and replaced their sigma letter, ς (pronounced as “s” sound).

It views as true; however, I disagree with the theory that Iesous comes from Yeshua. My reasoning is that Yeshua is Modern Hebrew. Modern Hebrew was not established until the 10th century AD by the Masoretes group. Although the New Testament (NT) letters were written in the 1st century AD from various authors, but the book of NT was not established until the 4th century AD by Roman Emperor Constantine.

Since Modern Hebrew was formed in the 10th century AD, it means that the Ancient Hebrew was used instead until the 10th century AD. The Ancient Hebrew for the Messiah is יהשוע, which is Yahawash. So, Iesous could not have come from Yahawash, since Greeks did not have Y, W, and SH letters.

The LXX Septuagint, which is an Old Testament (OT) written in Greek from the Hebrew scrolls, was established in the 2nd century BCE. Since Joshua and Yahawash have the same name, יהושע, Iesous was also used for Joshua’s name in the LXX OT. (Yeshua in Modern Hebrew is יֵשׁוּעַ, which is slightly different from יהושע.) Per Greek Strong Concordance, Iesous derived from root word YHWSH (יהושע) from OT, which means “The Lord is Salvation”. So, Iesous means The Lord is Salvation, not Zeus or Hail Zeus.

Christ is a title and not part of a name. Christ in Greek is Χριστοῦ (Christou in English). Christou or Christos (khrees-tos') in Greek means The Anointed One, Messiah.

Thus, we have Iesous Christou that means “The Lord is Salvation, The Anointed One" So, those who says that Iesous Christou or Jesus Christ is a pagan god, Zeus, or Hail Zeus is warned of bringing down condemnation upon themselves. It would be considered a blaspheme against Yah.

Therefore, the Greek Iesous Christou is the translation for Yahawash, The Messiah - not a transliteration from Yeshua. Yahawash HaMashayach means Yah is Salvation, The Messiah (Anointed King). HaMashayach is pronounced as Haw-maw-shaw-yawk). Modern Hebrew for The Messiah is HaMashiach (Haw-Maw-shee-awk).

Do not use or associate the name Horus with Jesus Christ because Horus is an Egyptian pagan god. Anyone who pays homage to Jesus Horus Christ is actually worshiping a false or pagan god. In that case, it would be the Hesus Horus Krishna behind the name Jesus Horus Christ.

A good example is that if there are two John Smith. John Smith from City A is good and the other John Smith from City B is evil. Does it mean that John Smith from City A is evil because he has the same name as the one from City B who is evil? No, I think not, for they are two different individuals.

Numerous people are claiming that Jesus is Tammuz. Let's compare the summary.

Jesus The Christ

Tammuz

Conceived by Set-Apart Spirit from Yah through Virgin Mary

Conceived by the sun rays of sun god Nimrod through Queen Semiramis of Babylon

Died on the stake (not cross)

Killed by a boar

A Messiah of Yahawah

A Babylonian god

Died and resurrected once

Died and resurrected each year

King of the Jews

Divine child of a Babylonian religion

I do not see any resemblance between Jesus The Christ and Tammuz. Therefore, Jesus cannot be Tammuz. The scripture mentioned once about Tammuz in Ezekiel 8:14 and doesn't give much detail about Tammuz. However, the legend of Tammuz was spread throughout the generations since the Babylonian era.

TEOYM prays this clears up the confusions and controversies.

So, is it okay to use Jesus The Christ?

It probably would be okay. However, I believe we should use His True Hebrew Name - Yahawash The Messiah, since we are able to pronounce His Name. I would rather use true names.

On another other blog, I shared about my nickname my brothers called me, which is Banana or Bionic Banana. They are not my true name, which is Christina Thoma. When they call me Banana or Bionic Banana, do I respond? Yes, I do. Why? Because of the relationship we have and recognizing their voice. So, as a result, I believe The Messiah will respond to the English name Jesus The Christ, which is His nickname derived from the Greek Iesous Christos, meaning “The Lord is Salvation, The Anointed One.”

My Dad used to call me “Teen or Teeny” and would always know he’s calling for me. Most people call me Christine instead of Christina. However, I still respond, even though the pronunciation is slightly different.

However, if I were to write a book or someone is writing about me or talking about my fame, I would rather they use my real name, Christina Thoma. Definitely not my nickname, especially Banana or Bionic Banana. LOL. Would you feel the same concerning your name?

I believe we should honor His True Hebrew Name - YHWSH (Yahawash).

I hope this clarifies.

It’s important to know whom you are worshiping and connecting with.

John 4:24

Elohim is Spirit, and those who worship Him need to worship in spirit and truth.

  • Elohim means Supreme Being, Father, or Creator

It’s critical to know who you are worshiping. I truly believe that Father knows whom you are worshiping through your heart and spirit.

Those who are not worshiping Him nor receiving His Son, the Messiah, are not worshiping Him. Instead, they are worshiping the Devil.

1 John 2:23

No one denying the Son has the Father. The one confessing the Son has the Father as well.

Matthew 15:8

This people draw near to Me with their mouth, and respect Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.

There are those who disguise themselves to worship the Devil by pretending to honor the Father and Son.

John 5:23

… that all should value (honor) the Son even as they value (honor) the Father. He who does not value the Son does not value the Father who sent Him.

So, be mindful of whom you are worshiping and learning from. Yahawah knows whom you are truly worshiping in spirit and in truth.

John 4:19-24

The woman said to Him, “Master, I see that You are a prophet. “Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you people say that in Yerushalayim is the place where one needs to worship.” יהושע said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you shall neither on this mountain, nor in Yerushalayim, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because the deliverance is of the Yehuḏim. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also does seek such to worship Him. Elohim is Spirit, and those who worship Him need to worship in spirit and truth.”
